Unemployment: From Worst to Bad

The real unemployment rate released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is 17.3%, over 7 points higher than the official rate.  This means that over 29.9 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed.

The real rate includes marginally attached workers which the BLS reports “are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule.”

ADA National Director, Michael J. Wilson, said: "The Great Recession continues as 26.9 million Americans began the New Year the way they ended the old year; out of work and looking for jobs. While the trend is in the right direction, that is meager news to the 1 in 5 Americans who are without the dignity and paychecks that come with jobs. Congress and the Administration must offer job producing policies now, in order to avoid a slow, jobless recovery that leaves millions behind and without hope."

ADA is advocating for a Corps budget, which would offer congress the opportunity to act now to scale up these existing programs so that thousands of Americans could get back to work and earn decent wages.
