Maine passed marriage equality into law this year; however the same people who organized the effort for Prop 8 in California are now targeting Maine. Our opponents know that we have yet to win marriage equality at the ballot box—they want to replicate their efforts from CA and end the momentum for equal rights. We can’t let this happen.
The opposition is almost entirely funded and lobbied by out-of-state organizations / lobby groups. For instance:
•Schubert Flint, an advertising agency that created many of the ads against proposition 8 in California, is now creating new propaganda for Maine.
•The organization that has been hired to gather signatures against the current law, Stand for Marriage Maine, has actually been tied to an out-of-state firm. Nice name, eh?
•In the last quarter financial reports, out of $350,000, only $400 came from individual contributions! Let me put it a different way, only four individuals donated to the opposition. The rest were large donations from lobby groups such as, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage, Focus on the Family, Maine Marriage Committee & Knights of Columbus.
We should all start paying very close attention to the battle in Maine. As the say, "As goes Maine, so goes the nation."
