Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) indicated today that the Senate will not finish the war supplemental spending bill before the Memorial Day district work period.  The Senate will finish work on the Iraq supplemental, HR 2642 next month.

The Bush Administration has threatened furloughs of employees and other drastic action if Congress fails to act quickly to replenish fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Senate Republicans have indicated they will fight to remove policy provisions dealing with veterans' education, health, a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits, a 'patriot's tax' on millionaires that would pay for a new GI Bill, and other domestic spending in the latest Iraq war funding bill.  The bill also includes a provision preventing the administration from implementing seven regulations that would shift some Medicaid costs from the federal government to the states.  Republicans are determined to remove these policy provisions from the bill.  Republicans only want war funding in the bill.
