Over 180 Walmart Workers Gain Union Rights in Canada

Yesterday approximately 180 Walmart workers in St-Hyacinthe, Québec gained a UFCW Canada union contract. This triumph has made them the first main store group of Walmart employees in the province to gain the protections of a union contract. The new contract includes seniority rights, wage increases, a non-discriminatory wage ladder and legally binding grievance procedures. These benefits will help to provide the workers with a more fair and stable workplace.

Not surprisingly, Walmart put up a fight against the union contracts.  There are at least two other incidents where workers attempted to organize in St-Hyacinthe and Walmart responded by shutting down those locations. This is a common fear tactic that corporations use to discourage workers from forming a union. Take action today against greedy companies like Walmart by using our online activist tools to send a letter to the editor about the Employee Free Choice Act or use our online lobby features.
