In response to President-elect Obama’s press conference regarding today’s report that the economy has lost another 240,000 jobs and that there are now more than 10 million unemployed Americans, ADA National Director Amy Isaacs said:
“We are most pleased that President-elect Obama agrees with ADA’s call for an extension of unemployment benefits as a first response. It will be a very unhappy holiday season for hundreds of thousands of struggling families if Congress does not extend unemployment benefits during the lame duck session.
“Further, we agree with President-elect Obama’s call for a an economic recovery program that puts the needs of working people first and includes financial assistance to small businesses and state governments. Putting money directly into the hands of people who are most likely to spend it is the quickest way to improve the struggling economy.”
Earlier today ADA reported the October Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report reveals that besides the 10.1 million officially tallied unemployed, there were 6.7 million workers able and willing to work full time but who were forced to take part-time employment because of poor economic conditions. An additional 1.6 million people wanted to work and had looked for employment during the last 12 months but were unable to find jobs. When these workers are added to the official count, the “real rate” of unemployment reaches 11.8%.
