Historic Signing in D.C.

On December 18th, the D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty offered an early Christmas present to the LBGT community when he signed the marriage equality bill into law. This means equal rights for hospital visitation, health care and marriage. This is nothing else but equality, justice and freedom. These values are the fundament of the United States and should never be denied.

Finally, LGBT couples will no longer be considered as second-class citizens in the District of Columbia. The inevitable discrimination that flows from permitting some marriages but not others is both unfair and unconstitutional. Government’s role is to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunities for all citizens. Discrimination should never, ever be enshrined in law and our nation’s capital is the next to lead the way in opposition to this state sponsored discrimination.

This new decision should be a model, followed by the rest of the nation. In New Jersey, the vote on same-sex marriage has been postponed and I strongly hope that the bill can pass before mid-January. In Maine, the last referendum overturned the right of same-sex couples to get married in their state. It’s going to be a long haul before the nation understands that having marriage equality is not a question on the institution of marriage, but rather a question of fairness, equality and justice for all.
