Wal-Mart forced to offer unionization in Communist country

"The fact that China is leading the United States in pressuring anti-union companies like Wal-Mart to respect basic human and worker rights is disgraceful," said Amy Isaacs, National Director of Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), the nation's oldest independent liberal political organization. "The irony of one of the world's most diligent oppressors forcing the largest company in the world's largest democracy to recognize a basic democratic right can't be missed. It's time for the National Labor Relations Board to become equally aggressive in this country."

According to an Associated Press story, Wal-Mart was forced to release a statement indicating that its Wal-Mart China stores would honor employee requests to form unions after China threatened to sue companies based outside the country if they do not set up union branches in their China operations.

"It is my sincere hope that the President, Department of Labor, and Congress will take a hint from China and force Wal-Mart and other anti-union companies here in this country to respect human rights and the right to form unions," said Isaacs.
