In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee today, General David Petraeus gave evidence that the Iraq troop "surge" has been a failure. As President Bush has ordered the slow reduction of forces from Iraq, violence has spiked, and now General Petraeus is telling Congress we need to stop bringing troops home.
"Here we are in the same place we were in 2006, when voters were smart enough to know we needed a change," said Amy Isaacs, ADA National Director. "Yet, inexplicably, Congress has done nothing to end this war."
The General's testimony makes clear the Iraqi government has made no progress creating the political reconciliation needed to end the violence and our troops remain trapped in the middle of a civil war.
President Bush argued the Iraqi government just needed time to resolve their differences as justification for escalating the war. He got that time and nothing changed. Unless Congress acts now, President Bush will leave office while the troops he sent to Iraq remain mired in the mess he created. A mess that is costing us $3 billion a week and our son's and daughter's lives.
"We cannot afford to wait until the next election since it was the last election when the American people voted for change," said Isaacs.
