Americans for Democratic Action Lauds DC Marriage Equality Bill

Endorses National Equality March

Washington, DC – Americans for Democratic Action proudly supports the efforts of District of Columbia Councilmember David Catania and the other sponsors of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009.

The law would permit same-sex couples the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples.

ADA National Director Michael J. Wilson said:  ADA strongly supports the DC city council’s efforts to bring marriage equality to the nation’s capital.  We believe that discrimination should never, ever be enshrined in law and that our nation’s capital should be leading the way.

“Until the District achieves statehood, the right to self-government is under constant threat from Federal lawmakers seeking to score easy political points with their supporters back home.  We believe that Councilmember Catania’s patient and thoughtful approach to marriage equality will result in little or no Federal interference at present.”

Americans for Democratic Action also endorsed today the National Equality March.  ADA members are organizing a group to march with LGBT advocates.

ADA supports full equality for LGBT Americans and intends to use its full legislative, political, policy, and grassroots apparatus to fight for justice.
