Americans for Democratic Action commends and congratulates President Obama for delivering one of the most significant Inaugural speeches in our nation's history. Rarely have progressive values received such a powerful endorsement; from his vivid allusions to the civil rights movements, to his courageous plea for recognition and acceptance of the LGBT community, President Obama gave voice to those ideals and principles which preserve the rights of all Americans, regardless of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

In an era defined by divisiveness and partisan bitterness, the President's second inaugural address is reminiscent of his 2008 campaign, where he proudly calls for inclusion and tolerance, shifting away from the “Culture Wars” and ideological battles. And unlike so many of his predecessors, President Obama's celebration of our nation's diversity marks a new recognition of the unique, unifying power of multiculturalism.

Though battles remain ahead, progressives must take heart knowing that our country is embarking down a new path in our historic journey. Instead of shunning or downplaying our differences, we celebrate them; not only for their own sake, but also because they are a source of boundless strength.
