Amy Isaacs, National Director of Americans for Democratic Action, issued the following statement today:

“President Obama’s recent announcement that government agents and doctors who participated in the torture of individuals in their custody would not face justice has raised serious questions about our commitment to international law.

“President Obama is using the Nuremburg defense to protect those who, in his mind, were just following orders.  It is a position the United States argued vehemently against after World War II because we knew if everyone – from the top down – who perpetrated such horrors against humanity were not brought to justice, it could happen again.  Our position should be no different now.  We should hold ourselves at least to the same standards we demand of others.  In fact, we contend we should hold ourselves to an even higher standard.

“We are extremely grateful to President Obama for his unequivocal assertion that the United States does not torture.  But what we have learned since the release of the torture memos is that the correct assertion is that the United States does not torture anymore.

“We have tortured.  We are a nation that has tortured people with the full knowledge and support of the highest elected officials.  It’s beyond shocking to learn this of ourselves.  Let’s not compound that shame by refusing to prosecute the people responsible for these crimes – at all levels.”
