Americans for Democratic Action applauds Congress for passing the State Children’s Health Insurance Program by a large margin and with strong bipartisan support. After two cruel vetoes last year by former President Bush, President Obama signed the bill into law today. ADA National Director Amy Isaacs said: “During these dire economic times, extending health care to the neediest among us was not only the right thing to do but a necessary one. We at ADA are pleased to see the new Congress and our new President responding to the needs of working people and doing the job they were sent to Washington to do.” The SCHIP program is vital for working families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to purchase private health insurance for their children. It is estimated 10 million kids will get the care they deserve through SCHIP and lower the ranks of uninsured children by more than 25%. ADA members participated in intensive lobbying for more than a year to ensure SCHIP became law. |
