Organizations like Half in Ten, The Corps Network and Voices for National Service, which participated in the lecture, propose young adults from 18 to 25 could gain experience while working in rewarding volunteer programs. They could volunteer for a year in social services programs, environment restoration, recycling and others field where work is needed. These kinds of programs allow them to gain professional experience and develop their skills while receiving financial help for their studies. I believe that this could be a great transition from school to the job market, as well as an interesting way to be integrated in society. 3.5 million students drop out of school each year and the unemployment for youth and recent graduates is at an all time high. Therefore, such organizations are overwhelmed by the demand; for one new position, coordinators receive five applications. They are now asking for federal help, arguing that the volunteer field affects half a million young people each year and $160 billion dollars would provide productive and useful work in our communities. I personally think that this new idea in the job crisis debate deserved to be considered and developed. Comments
