Health Care Reform: A Good First StepWhile far from perfect, the health care reform bill that finally was signed into law after a year-long struggle will provide real benefits for tens of millions of Americans, begin to rationalize our fragmented health-care delivery system, and save the government money. Thirty million uninsured Americans will have access to affordable care, the worst abuses of the insurance industry will be curbed, and Medicare strengthened. However, as an organization that has historically advocated for a far more fundamental restructuring of America's health care system, ADA views the recent law not as the end of the reform process, but a good first step. We urge our members and supporters to continue to talk to their friends and neighbors, write letters to the editor and blog postings, and lobby your legislators on this vital issue until the job is truly finished. BackgroundADA has been committed to a National Health Service since 1972 and continues to promote publicly supported, universal, comprehensive health coverage, specifically a single payer National Health Service. Even after the most recent reform, some 15 million Americans will remain uninsured and tens of millions more fwill ace uncertain future expenses and coverage choices. ADA believes the simplest, most cost efficient solution is a single-payer one-class health care system, not linked to a job. Medicare for all, excluding private insurance companies, would save money, cover everyone, and allow patients to choose their health care providers, who would be paid by the government.
