Economic Stimulus Package II

America is now in a recession. The economy has lost 296,000 private sector jobs in the past quarter. Unemployment claims have surged upwards to a four-week average of 376,000. And, many Americans who are employed are seeing their hours cut.

The first economic stimulus package enacted several months ago is just beginning to reach the hands of Americans squeezed by higher costs of consumer goods like food, gas and utilities.  As the economy continues to weaken, now is the time for the Congress to act to prevent more hardship for millions of Americans.

House and Senate Democrats are discussing what should be included a second economic stimulus package that invests in the people who are most impacted by the recession.  Any good stimulus package should include expanded unemployment insurance benefits, Food Stamps and other nutrition assistance, aid to states and localities to prevent harsh cuts in Medicaid, SCHIP, and other services, help with home energy costs, restoration of child support enforcement funding, prevention of Head Start cutbacks, summer jobs for unemployed youth, and school repair projects.

A good stimulus package should be enacted, timely.  Now it’s up to us to make sure these initiatives reverse the impact of the recession for ordinary Americans.

ADAction:  Use the Capitol Switchboard (202- 224-3121) to call your Representative now and tell them to pass a second Economic Stimulus Package. Find your Representative by using the tool to the right.

Urge your Representatives to pass a more effective economic stimulus package.  Here's a suggested script:

I am calling to urge you to support speedy enactment of a second economic stimulus package that provides relief for low-to-moderate income people and prevents harsh cutbacks in state and local services. The economy is getting worse and investing in America’s future is the most effective ways to boost the economy and reverse the effects of this recession.

After your call, please forward this message to other ADAers, friends and three members of your family. Together we can ensure Congress pass a package that provides for a shared recovery.

Senate Republicans Blocking Fair Pay Bill

HR 2831 is intended to reverse the Supreme Court decision that allows women to be paid less for equal work.

The case was based on a complaint filed in 1998 by Lilly Ledbetter, who alleged that, during a 19-year career her supervisors conspired to pay her less than men doing substantially identical work.  The Supreme Court ruled that workers filing suit for pay discrimination must do so within 180 days of when the alleged discrimination occurred regardless of the fact that they have no way of knowing if they are being paid less.

An effort to invoke cloture on the bill, HR 2831, was rejected, 56-42, on April 23.

ADAction:  Use the form on the right to find your Senators and then tell them workers deserve equal pay for equal work.
